Description
White buffalo grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), also known as buffalo turf or St. Augustine grass, is a warm-season perennial grass species native to coastal areas of the Americas. It is widely cultivated for its dense, lush growth habit, tolerance to a variety of growing conditions, and attractive appearance.
Appearance: White buffalo grass forms a dense, carpet-like turf with broad, coarse-textured leaves that are typically a vibrant green color. It spreads via stolons, producing a thick mat of grass that effectively crowds out weeds and other unwanted vegetation. The grass can reach a height of 6 to 8 inches when left unmowed, but it is often maintained at a shorter height for aesthetic purposes.
Adaptability: One of the key characteristics of white buffalo grass is its adaptability to various soil types and environmental conditions. It thrives in warm, humid climates and is commonly found in coastal regions with sandy or loamy soils. White buffalo grass is also moderately tolerant of shade, making it suitable for use in partially shaded areas of the landscape.
Low Maintenance: This grass is favored for its low maintenance requirements, making it an attractive option for homeowners and landscapers alike. Once established, it requires minimal watering and fertilization, and it is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. Additionally, white buffalo grass has good tolerance to foot traffic and can withstand moderate wear and tear, making it suitable for use in high-traffic areas such as lawns, parks, and golf courses.
Aesthetic Appeal: Beyond its practical benefits, it is valued for its lush, verdant appearance, which adds beauty and visual interest to outdoor spaces. Its dense growth habit provides excellent ground cover, creating a soft, inviting surface for relaxation and recreation. Whether used in residential or commercial landscapes, white buffalo grass enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of outdoor environments.
Guinea/ White Buffalo grass is a summer growing perennial species. This grass is highly variable and can be tufted with or without short rhizomes.
Where to use White Buffalo Grass
Pastures are usually used as long-term pastures if the soil fertility is maintained. The tolerance to shade makes this species suited for agroforestry. This grass is best adapted to areas where the annual rainfall is 550 mm per annum.
